Why Your Kid Can't Shoot Hard (And It's Not What YouTube Is Telling You)

I remember standing on the sideline at my son's U10 game, watching him wind up for what should have been a clear shot on goal — big swing, full commitment — and the ball sort of floated into the goalkeeper's arms like a gift. He was crushed. I was confused. He had done everything the YouTube video said.

The internet is full of soccer shooting tips that tell kids to "swing your leg back further," "follow through more," or "stretch it out." And honestly? That advice isn't wrong, exactly. It's just dangerously incomplete — and for young players, incomplete advice has a way of building bad habits that are really hard to unlearn.

Here's what's actually going on when your kid struggles to put power on the ball. And more importantly, here's what you can do about it.


The "Big Backswing" Myth

The most common piece of advice floating around soccer coaching circles is this: if your shot has no power, your backswing isn't big enough. Swing the leg back further, get more range of motion, and the power will follow.

Sounds logical. It's also why so many youth players look like they're doing a slow-motion karate kick when they shoot — lots of range, no result.

Here's the analogy that changed how I think about this: imagine a bow and arrow. You can pull the bowstring back as far as you want, but if the string is loose and floppy, the arrow goes nowhere. The distance you pull is almost irrelevant. What matters is the tension in the string while you pull it.

Your child's leg works the same way. A long, floppy backswing with zero muscular tension in the hip flexors, hamstrings, and core produces a soft shot. Every time. This is the "range of motion ≠ power" problem, and it's the single biggest misconception I see in youth soccer training.


What's Actually Powering a Hard Shot

Professional players — think Cristiano Ronaldo, or any technically elite striker you admire — don't just have a big leg swing. They have elastic energy stored and released through a coordinated chain of body mechanics. Sports scientists call it the kinetic chain, and here's the simplified version:

It starts with the support foot planting firmly into the ground (ground force). Then the core braces and the hips begin to rotate. The kicking leg — while under tension — loads back, and then snaps forward like a whip. The arms counterbalance. The foot strikes the ball at peak velocity. That last part is key: the power isn't in the follow-through. The power is in the instant of contact.

Here's something that surprises a lot of parents: Ronaldo's famous knuckleball free-kick has almost no follow-through. He basically stops his leg after contact. And yet it dips and swerves at speeds that terrify goalkeepers. That's because all the energy was transferred at the moment of impact, not swept along afterward.

The Thing Nobody Talks About: Your Kid's Body Isn't Ready Yet

Here's the part that took me a while to accept as a parent: sometimes the issue isn't technique at all. It's developmental.

Young players — especially under age 12 — genuinely don't have the leg mass or the neuromuscular recruitment patterns to generate adult-level striking power. Their muscles haven't learned how to fire quickly and in the right sequence. That's not a failure of coaching. That's biology. And no amount of YouTube tutorials about backswing mechanics will override it.

What this means for you as a soccer parent: stop comparing your 9-year-old's shot to a highlight reel. Instead, focus on building the correct movement patterns now, so that when their body catches up developmentally, the technique is already there waiting for it.

The 3-Step Progression That Actually Works

Here's what I've seen work — both from watching excellent youth coaches and from what the training community broadly agrees on. Instead of starting with a full run-up and big swing, work through these three stages:

No run-up striking — plant, brace, contact

Stand still. Place the ball. Focus on planting the support foot correctly, bracing the core, and striking with a firm ankle. No backswing required. The goal here is quality of contact and learning what "locked" feels like in the standing leg and core. This is unglamorous work. It's also the most important work.

Step 2
One-step approach — rhythm before range

Take a single step before contact. This introduces momentum without chaos. The technique from Step 1 should survive the added motion. If it doesn't — if the plant foot starts drifting or the core goes soft — stay here longer. One step, clean contact, consistent form.

Full approach — now add the backswing

Only after the foundation is solid does it make sense to add a full approach run, a bigger leg swing, and hip-shoulder separation. Now the backswing actually has something to work with — a planted foot, a braced core, elastic tension in the leg muscles. Now the bow has a tight string.

This isn't the fun route. Your kid wants to just run up and blast it. But skipping steps is exactly how you build a player who looks like they're shooting hard and isn't. What About Flexibility Training?

This is where the original advice — stretch more, open the hip, increase range of motion — does have real value. But it needs context.

Flexibility in the hip flexors and hamstrings genuinely helps the leg move through a larger arc. And shoulder-hip separation (the twist you see when elite players "wind up") is a real mechanical advantage that allows more rotational energy to build before release. Think of a tennis serve, or an archer drawing a bow — the body loads, then uncoils.

So yes, encourage your young player to stretch their hip flexors. Yes, core and hip mobility matter. But here's my honest parental-coach advice: don't teach them to stretch before they can plant. Don't teach them to wind up before they can contact cleanly. Flexibility is a tool that multiplies whatever technique is already there. If the technique is broken, more flexibility just produces a bigger broken shot.


A Note on What "Power Training" Actually Looks Like for Young Players

I want to be direct here: for most players under 13, shooting power is a poor training goal. Shooting quality is the right goal. Clean contact, correct plant, good follow-through direction, confident strike — these are the things that produce a good shooter at age 16. At age 9, chasing power is chasing the wrong thing.

The players I've seen develop the best strikes as teenagers were, almost without exception, the kids who learned to hit the ball cleanly at a young age — not the ones who were "blasting it" in U8. Power comes from physical maturity plus good technique. You can only control one of those variables. Focus on it.

The One Thing to Say After a Soft Shot

If your kid comes off the field frustrated because their shots aren't hard enough, resist the temptation to tell them to "swing it more." Try this instead: "Did your plant foot feel solid?" It's a simple question, and it redirects their attention to the right thing. Because nine times out of ten, a soft shot isn't a leg problem. It's a foundation problem. Plant foot, core, contact — in that order. The leg speed takes care of itself when those three are locked in.

Building a powerful shot in soccer is a long game. It requires patience from parents, smart progression from coaches, and a willingness to do the boring, foundational work before the exciting stuff. But when it clicks — when your kid's shot suddenly has that satisfying thwack and the ball flies true — you'll know it was worth every unspectacular rep along the way.
